Aaaaaghhh!!! This class will NEVER end!!

Here's some good news. I got this response from the city about the flyers:

Dear Ms Silver:

The recent mobilization of the community to assist in finding Bean clearly indicates that losing a pet is a distressful situation for not only the pet’s owners but for everyone who hears about it. Those feelings of distress and sympathy for the owner are shared by the staff in the City-County Planning Department.

Interim Director Steve Medlin is attending an out-of-office meeting today but he forwarded your message to me so that I could provide you with a more timely response to your concerns about posting flyers in the rights-of-way and on utility poles.

As you may have learned, such signs in the rights-of-way and on utility poles are not permitted by ordinance. In addition, most power companies, including Duke Power and Progress Energy prohibit signs on utility poles. We have been told that the residual staples create hazards for line workers. As an alternative, we encourage people to put the signs adjacent to the right of way on private property.

The standard procedure for the Planning Department is to first provide information verbally about the violation, since most people are not familiar with zoning regulations. A second step would be to write a Notice of Violation seeking voluntary compliance with the ordinance. Compliance is our goal for a better Durham. We are NOT seeking fines, although fines have been used as a last resort to resolve situations.

At this point in time, the Department has not issued a Notice of Violation in this case. Since Steve Medlin is out of the office, we will await his return to discuss the situation with him, review our obligations to enforce Durham’s ordinance with equality, and determine what course of action the Department should take.

We will be happy to keep you informed of the situation and, in the meantime, continue to hope that Bean will be returned home safely.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Estes

Assistant Director

Wow - that brought tears to my eyes! Chalk one up for the city of Durham!

I've posted the flier in my break room and have alerted my co-workers as we work on Broad Street. Bean's story has touched me in so many ways. It's a testament to you all that you are willing to go to these measures to find Bean. I would do the same thing but I know not everyone shares the same sentiment.

May this be a positive weekend for you...in the meantime, I'll keep my eyes out for Little Miss Bean!

By the way, I love Bean's Blog and look forward to keeping up with Bean via her blog when she returns home to you.
Sending positive vibes your way!

Great job, Durham! I'm happy to help post additional flyers and Petey and I will be back on the trail (literally and figuratively) this afternoon! Hoping for good news!!

Another helpful suggestion. Is Bean microchipped? If so, you may want to contact the company. I know Home Again, maintains a lost pet database and sends out alerts.

I just put up some flyers at the Banfield Vet at the Petsmart on North Pointe, and one at the cashier. And I have my flyer in my car window! Petey and I are heading out again! Can't wait for someone to spot her!

I came across the below website that
may be worth looking at.

Their alert system may be a quick way to get the info out to some surrounding areas.

I'd like to suggest a Bean Brigade search for this Saturday. We could canvas a targeted area going door-to-door with the fliers. With a good group of people we could cover a lot of ground. I'd be happy to help in coordinating.

Hi, I heard about your story thru Briony with New Leash on Life. I am the proud momma of a pit and a rottie. Your story definitely touched me as I would be absolutely devasted if my 2 girls were missing. I applaud all of the hard work and dedication shown by you and everyone thats heard of this story. Its sooooooooo nice to know people DO care about the animals. My mother, boyfriend and I live in Raleigh but if you are in need of some volunteer searchers for Bean this weekend we would like to help. Just email me at kittiesanddoggie@yahoo.com. We would like to help in some way if we can. Keeping my fingers crossed till Bean comes home! ~Chris

I won't have tons of time this weekend but am happy to help search by myself or with others - so if something is coordinated, please share!!! I'll do my best to be there!! A Bean Brigade may just be the ticket.

It is Eve with a New Leash on Life. Briony and I searched this evening in the woods along the trial and part of the area near 85. Briony searched by herself for a couple of hours. We are talking about getting our group together on Saturday, but the more eyes and ears the better. I do not know for sure all the info, but will let you all know. If other people can group together, that would be awesome. We may need to start handing out flyers on the opposite side of North Gate (85). You never know. People out that way may not have heard about Bean. Just a suggestion.
I am praying hard and keeping positive.
